Explaining Sexual Harassment

What is sexual harassment? It is a form of discrimination that is based on sex/gender. This can include issues related to pregnancy, childbirth, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or any medical conditions related to sex/gender. Individuals of any gender can be the target of sexual harassment, and it does not always have to be motivated by sexual desire. Sexual harassment can happen between two people of the same gender, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
There are two different types of sexual harassment. The first is “quid pro quo.” This type of harassment happens when someone conditions a job, promotion, or other work benefit on the submission to sexual advances or other conduct based on sex.
The other type is called a “hostile work environment.” This type of harassment occurs when unwelcome comments or conduct based on sex unreasonably interfere with your work performance or create a hostile, intimidating, or offensive work environment. You might experience this type of harassment even if the improper conduct was not directly aimed at you.
